Selection Interviewing

OBJECTIVES

Selection interviewing is a complex and time consuming process.  The objective of this course is to hire people who have the necessary skills, knowledge, and desire to do a specific job.  It is important to ensure that you interview for all three elements.

Identify the Most Critical Job Qualifications

Participants will decide what behavior an applicant must exhibit to be successful in the job. They will document the six to ten competencies without which the applicant would certainly fail.

Consistently Apply a Step-By-Step Procedure

The process used from initial recruiting through the final hiring decision should be planned thoroughly and applied consistently for each applicant of a given job. This will ensure that each applicant is treated fairly and that the hiring process is efficient.

 

Practice Effective Interviewing Skills

This unit emphasizes the majority of time spent in the interview asking specific questions.  The questions should focus on the person’s behavior in previous positions relative to the job qualifications of the open position. The interviewer must listen carefully to the answers and be prepared to ask follow-up questions designed to clearly understand the examples being offered by the applicant.

Create a Positive Impression

The interviewing process is a two-way street.  Not only do you want to gather enough information about the applicant’s ability to handle the job, you also want to impress the candidate with the quality of the work environment or other attributes of joining the organization.

DURATION

The workshop is designed to last three days.  It is recommended that they be consecutive days.  It can also be taught in six half-day increments.
