Performance Management

OBJECTIVES

Performance Management is an important supervisory skill. Leaders are charged with the responsibility of getting things done through others. This course will help you establish a systematic approach to ensure that direct reports are meeting or exceeding their performance expectations.

CRITICAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Performance Results Categories
Gaining Commitment to Performance Expectations
Coaching and Reinforcing Performance
Motivating Through Performance Review

Performance Results Categories

The cycle begins with defining performance clearly. Most jobs can be realistically described within the framework of three to seven functional areas called Performance Results Categories (PRC).

Gaining Commitment to Performance Expectations

It is important to involve your direct reports in developing their own performance expectations. This will go a long way toward building commitment and ownership of the job. People will try harder and be more dedicated to accomplishing those results for which they have full agreement.

Coaching and Reinforcing Performance

During the eleven months and twenty-nine days between the Gaining Commitment meeting and the final Performance Review, there will be many opportunities to discuss performance. These Progress Review meetings are scheduled during the Gaining Commitment meeting. Once you have determined whether the person is on target or not, you will conduct either a Coaching meeting or a Reinforcing meeting.

Motivating Through Performance Review

The formal performance appraisal has two purposes. First, it’s important to document the progress the employee made toward each PRC. This completes the cycle that was started with the Gaining Commitment event at the beginning of the year. Second, it provides the opportunity to begin the cycle again by building on the past performance. You’ll want to set similar objectives for the coming year.

DURATION

The workshop is designed to last two days. It is recommended that they be consecutive days. It can also be taught in four half-day increments.
